چکیده

Long-term tracking of small-size animals with wireless sensor networks remains a challenge as only limited energy harvesting and storage is possible due to stringent size and weight constraints for animal collars. We present first experiences towards a perpetual monitoring system for free-living flying foxes. The high mobility of flying foxes requires a delay tolerant wireless network for data gathering: GPS positions and sensor data have to be stored locally until a wireless gateway deployed in bat congregation areas, so called roosting camps, comes within radio range. In this paper, we present the system architecture and discuss our design decisions towards sustainable and reliable monitoring of flying foxes with a limited energy budget for sensing, storage and communication. Using empirical data from three free-living flying foxes, we characterize the overall system performance in terms of energy consumption and latency.

MaxHopCount: A New Drop Policy to Optimize Messages Delivery Rate in Delay Tolerant Networks

Communication has become a necessity, not only between every point on the earth, but also on the globe. That includes hard topography, highlands, underwater areas, and also spacecrafts on other planets. However, the classic wired internet cannot be implemented in such areas, hence, researchers have invented wireless networks. The big challenge for wireless networking nowadays, is maintaining no...

Potential risk of viral transmission from flying foxes to domestic animals and humans on the southern coast of West Java, Indonesia

Flying foxes have been considered to be involved in the transmission of serious infectious diseases to humans. Using questionnaires, we aimed to determine the direct and/or indirect contacts of flying foxes in an Indonesian nature conservation area with domestic animals and humans living in the surrounding area. We surveyed 150 residents of 10 villages in West Java. Villages were classified int...

Hendra Virus Infection Dynamics in Australian Fruit Bats

Hendra virus is a recently emerged zoonotic agent in Australia. Since first described in 1994, the virus has spilled from its wildlife reservoir (pteropid fruit bats, or 'flying foxes') on multiple occasions causing equine and human fatalities. We undertook a three-year longitudinal study to detect virus in the urine of free-living flying foxes (a putative route of excretion) to investigate Hen...

Redundancy Analysis and a Distributed Self-Organization Protocol for Fault-Tolerant Wireless Sensor Networks

Sensor nodes in a distributed sensor network can fail due to a variety of reasons, e.g., harsh environmental conditions, sabotage, battery failure, and component wear-out. Since many wireless sensor networks are intended to operate in an unattended manner after deployment, failing nodes cannot be replaced or repaired during field operation. Therefore, by designing the network to be fault-tolera...

High-Resolution GPS Tracking of Lyle’s Flying Fox Between Temples and Orchards in Central Thailand

Hunting and loss of natural habitats increasingly threaten tropical biodiversity and ecosystems, particularly in Southeast Asia. Flying foxes often persist in anthropogenic areas where other wildlife has vanished, and where they play a significant ecological role in vegetation regeneration in disturbed habitats. Detailed knowledge on the foraging behavior of flying foxes is crucial for understa...
